Introducing – The Mido Ocean Star 200 Red Bull Cliff Diving Limited Edition

Since 2019, Mido has partnered with one of the most impressive and risky aquatic sport you can imagine, freediving. Under the name Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, established in 2009, is an annual international series of cliff diving events reunited some of the very best freediving competitors. Leaping from heights of up to 27 m, these exceptional athletes execute masterful movements while confronting gravity head-on. This year, to mark the resumption of the championships, Mido is not only confirming its presence as a partner, but also presents a dedicated watch, which happens to also looks rather attractive. Here the new Mido Ocean Star 200 Red Bull Cliff Diving Limited Edition.

This limited edition of 500 pieces, dedicated to the seas and adrenaline-infused sports, is based on Mido’s classic dive watch with a modern touch, the Ocean Star 200 – which you can find in multiple other iterations and colours, as well as in a more vintage edition, the Tribute Edition. The watch itself is a fully equipped diver’s model, with a 42.5mm stainless steel case, finished with satin-brushed surfaces and polished accents. The design is relatively strong, with angular lugs and crown guards. Thanks to a screw-down crown and a screwed steel caseback (engraved with a specific decoration), the Mido Ocean Star 200 can withstand 200m of pressure. It also features a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating.

The main specificity of this Red Bull Cliff Diving Limited Edition comes from its colour scheme and dial finishing. Framed by a unidirectional bezel with a blue aluminium insert, the dial is vertically brushed and has an ocean-like blue colour. It features applied indexes and hands, largely filled with Super-LumiNova and is crossed by an orange seconds hand. This bright shade – Mido’s signature colour – also brings out the “Caliber 80” inscription at 6 o’clock. In addition to the three main hands, this edition of the Mido Ocean Star 200 displays a day-date complication.

Inside the case is the Mido Caliber 80, based on the ETA C07.621 or, in other words, the Powermatic 80. This movement, shared by most accessible brands inside the Swatch Group, is a strong evolution over the 2824 architecture, improved with a revised kinetic chain and lowered frequency. Now beating at 3Hz, it also has more than doubled its power reserve, at 80 hours. It is here presented in an élaboré grade and adjusted in 3 positions.

The Red Bull Cliff Diving Limited Edition is presented on a specific strap that matches the dial, made of technical synthetic fabric with orange stitching, to recall the accented elements on the dial. It is closed by a steel pin-buckle.
