Back in 2019, Certina introduced the DS Action GMT as a capable sports watch for globetrotters. For 2021 the Swatch group brand has expanded the DS Action GMT family with a new Pepsi-themed variation. Featuring a navy-blue dial with red accents, this new watch sits next to its coke (black and red dial) sibling and brings more versatility to the collection.
It is a well-known fact that Pepsi is one of the most loved aerated cola drinks in the world. Another interesting, but not so well-known fact is that even though the two have no direct connection, Pepsi has a sought-after colorful influence on watches, which can also be seen on the new Certina DS GMT pictured here. The Blue and Red Pepsi theme on this watch has been highlighted through the 24-hour GMT scale presented on the outer flange of the dial. The upper half of the flange is painted in blue, whereas the lower half is red. The dial once again has been offered in a deep shade of blue and features a familiar legible layout comprising applied lume filled hour indices, a printed minute track, and a date window at 3. As for the hands, you get a fat arrow-style hour hand, a simple sword for minutes, a red-tipped second’s hand, and a bright red arrow-tipped GMT hand to read time in an additional time zone.
Made using 316 L stainless steel, the case on this watch measures 43mm in diameter and has a modest thickness of 12.6mm. The case is nicely finished and exhibits a nice interplay between brushed and polished surfaces. There is 200 meters of water resistance on offer, which is ensured through the threaded crown at 3.
Powering the DS Action GMT is the automatic caliber Powermatic 80.661. This movement uses the caliber Powermatic 80 as its base and adds a GMT module on top. It operates at a frequency of 3Hz and offers an impressive autonomy of 80 hours. The movement is hidden underneath a closed case back.
The new Certina DS Action GMT (Reference: C032.429.18.041.00) comes mated to a blue nato strap and is available to purchase at an MRP of CHF 885. The watch is a special edition but is thankfully not a limited edition.
