Objest is a young brand of a few years from designer Jared Mankelow, who focuses on simple, contemporary aesthetics and animal welfare. Based in London, the brand sticks with a consistent design language that makes the watches easily recognizable and the latest Hach V is no exception. Just compare an early Objest automatic we looked at a few years ago. Launching on Kickstarter later today, the main differences from prior collections are dial variations, keeping with the brand’s ethos. The watches are also PETA-Approved Vegan, meaning materials are animal friendly and 10% of sales will be donated to animal sanctuaries. Here is the Objest Hach V Automatic.

The watch comes with either a black or white dial, but all cases are stainless steel with a black DLC coating. There are no lugs as the strap attaches underneath the case, so its 42mm diameter will definitely wear smaller than the size suggests. The bezel curves down from the double-domed sapphire crystal to give the case a pebble-like vibe, which is complemented by a not-too-thin 11.3mm height. A rather flat crown fits the look and the exhibition case back is secured with four screws. Water-resistance is rated at 50 metres.

Looking at the dial, there are narrow parallel grooves at an angle, different from the somewhat random pattern on earlier watches. The Hach V also drops the date window from previous models, making it a time-only piece. Surrounding the main dial is a concave rim with a tight series of printed lines and applied steel indices at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. The simple baton hands are black on the white dial and white on the black dial models, and the seconds hand has a subtle point at the counterweight (Objest calls it a reverse teardrop).

Although designed in London, this is a Swiss watch through and through with the well-proven and ubiquitous ETA 2824-2 automatic beating inside. Specs include 25 jewels, 28,800vph (4Hz) and a 38-hour power reserve. This is a nice calibre for the price and many will appreciate it over a Sellita or Japanese counterpart. Seen from the exhibition caseback, it has a custom black or silver rotor with grooves matching the dial on the right half, which actually continues on the right half of the case back’s perimeter. Average accuracy is +/- 12 seconds per day with a maximum variance of 30 seconds.

The strap is black vegan leather with a DLC-coated pin buckle that reinforces the animal-friendly theme. As mentioned earlier, 10% of profits will be donated to three animal welfare groups – World Land Trust, FRIEND and The Farm Animal Sanctuary. Kickstarter prices start at CHF 370, GBP 325 or USD 445 for the first 25 watches and climb to CHF 455, GBP 400 and USD 545 after 75 watches are ordered.

A real value proposition for an unusual, stylish watch with an ETA automatic. And your money is going towards a very good cause to boot. For more information and to place an order, visit the Objest Kickstarter page. You can also see additional collections at Objest’s website.
