Edox recently added a new vintage-inspired watch to it its Sky Diver family. The Sky Diver was a rugged tool watch that was introduced in 1973 to cater to an elite group of paratroopers. The new Edox Skydiver Neptunian is a modern and highly capable dive watch that pays a tribute to the legacy of the original Sky Diver.
One of the key characteristics of a good dive watch is legibility and the Skydiver Neptunian is a winner in this regard. Offered in a dynamic blue gradient or jet-black color, the face of this watch is clutter-free and easy to read at a glance. Applied markings comprise the hour index and a white printed minute track runs on the outer periphery. The entire handset is well proportioned and consists of a broad arrow-shaped hour hand, a sword-shaped minute hand, and a lollipop tipped seconds hand. The hour markings along with the hands have also been deeply filled with white luminous paint to aid low light readability. There is a date window at 3 which does stand out a little. Another small detail that I feel could have been avoided is the water-resistance related text on the flange. A clean flange in my opinion would have looked better and the depth rating could have merged with the text above 6.
Like its vintage inspiration, the Skydiver Neptunian has been solidly built to handle whatever is thrown at it. Machined out of stainless steel, the case on the Skydiver Neptunian measures 44mm in diameter. The crystal on the front is a 3mm thick sapphire unit which combined with the threaded crown makes it possible to achieve a water resistance of 1000 meters. The bezel on top is a uni-directional unit that features a black ceramic insert for enhanced scratch resistance.
Flipping the watch reveals a closed case back that has been nicely decorated with a deeply stamped motif of the Greek god of the sea. Ticking inside the watch is the Calibre 80, a self-winding movement that is based on the workhorse Sellita SW200-1 movement. It operates at a frequency of 4Hz and offers a power reserve of around 38 hours when fully wound.
The new Edox Neptunian comes mated to a stainless-steel bracelet and retails for EUR1,250.
