Breitling has lately been delighting its fans by releasing some cool historically accurate re-edition watches. Earlier this year, the brand introduced the Superocean Heritage 57 Capsule, a new collection that pays a tribute to a popular reference from 1957. And now Breitling is expanding the Capsule collection with two special watches that have been created in collaboration with Kelly Slater’s surf brand, Outerknown.

Like the previously released Superocean Heritage 57 Capsule watches, it is the dial that steals the show on the new Heritage 57 Outerknown duo. Characterized by bold oversized applied hour markers and ornate hands, the brown dial looks the business. It features a nice sunburst finish which combined along with the polished steel/rose gold indices looks should enable some interesting light play. Supporting the hour markings is a white printed minute track that comprises long hash marks along with double-digit numerals at the four quadrants and offers a nice contrast against the dark background. To add to the retro vibe of the watch, the indices and the hands have been generously filled with custard colored luminous paint. And another great nod to the vintage past of this watch is the exclusion of a date window that helps maintain the symmetry of the dial.

The case like the dial showcases a strong vintage influence. One of the first things that pop and gives the watch a lot of character is the concave stadium-style bezel. And while the bezel and case combination look familiar, the execution is quite modern. For instance, the bezel insert is now made of ceramic to offer better scratch resistance and making it more suitable for daily rigors. Furthermore, the bezel grip on the bi-color reference has been executed in rose gold to match the hands and indices, accentuating the overall warm tones of the watch. The case is water-resistant to a healthy 100 meters, and it is also worth mentioning that the crown is a simple push-pull unit.

Hidden beneath the closed case back of these watches is Breitling’s calibre 10. This movement is based on the ETA 2892-A2, a slimmer and more refined cousin of the ETA 2824-2. It operates at a frequency of 4 Hz and provides an autonomy of around 42 hours. The movement also gets a COSC certification to ensure accuracy of within -4 to +6 seconds a day.
